Your Stinky Little Ego!

by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

"If you are willing to look at another person's behavior toward you as a reflection of the state of their relationship with themselves rather than a statement about your value as a person, then you will, over a period of time cease to react at all."

Yogi Bhajan

As a kid growing up in the streets of NYC you had to have a tough skin.
The boys in my neighborhood called each other by their distinguishing characteristics. Among the girls or parent's I was Larry but amongst the local kids, my friends, I was called the Beak, because my nose bent like a bird's beak. The local kids had no inhibitions about calling the small wiry kid, Mouse or the heavy-set kid, Fat Stuff. Eye glassed kids were Four Eyes and the neighborhood was complete with Dumb Shit and various other insulting names. The amazing thing, amongst these boy's, no one seemed to get insulted. I'm sure some did but no one showed it. No one seemed to take it personal. In fact, we made fun of our idiosyncrasies daily. It wasn't considered cruel or outrageous behavior. If you had a name, as ugly or stupid as it might have seen to outsiders, in our collective it meant you were loved and part of a group that was there for each other, thick or thin.  If you gave it to somebody verbally, you would most assuredly get it back and everyone would laugh at the silly exchange of insults.

Fortunately, we've come a long way since then.
Most of us think before we talk and we are sensitive to how people will respond to our verbal quips. For some, watching their tongue is just a matter of political correctness, for others, being sensitive is about kindness and thoughtfulness. I know you might think if you tell me I'm getting fat, I will have a revelation or some sort of epiphany and correct the error of my ways immediately. But it doesn't work like that and furthermore NEVER has worked like that. Don't you think I look in the mirror? If I'm really stuck in my melodrama, your sharing of "the truth" to somehow shock me into awakening will just make things worse.

Sai Baba says,

"Speak the truth but let it be kind and helpful."

Taking responsibility for your words is about how you use or misuse your power, how you transmit your energy verbally. Learning to use your words is a powerful spiritual practice.

Think before you talk.

The person who makes someone else wrong is usually trying to make themselves right. Of course it's at the expense of someone else and it is a typical example of a

little stinky ego.

That's the inferiority complex and basic insecurity that drives the neurotic preoccupation to be looked upon in a positive light even if it means trashing those around you. To be fair, you have to figure that kind of desperate drive for acceptance is fueled by a bankrupted self esteem.
That's the act of a handicapped individual.

And that's exactly what you say to yourself
instead of getting emotional and upset.

Unless a person has done a mountain of spiritual work on themselves,

what a person see's in the outside world and especially in others, is usually just a manifestation (a reflection) of their own desires, attachments, opinions and programming.
They do not see clearly!

Read that again and again and again.

So please...

stop getting upset over other peoples b.s.,

It's their problem! Don't make it yours.

It's your lower self that has all those negative reactions.

The indulgent dark side in all of us.
We call it the little stinky EGO.
It's that lower self that puts me on the continuous pendulum of happy, sad, happy sad,  like a helpless reactionary.

Every spiritual teacher, every spiritual path states
we need to extricate our self of our lower, negative emotions
and stop identifying with our little, constantly whining, imperfect self.

Act... not react.

Hold your center!
Stop giving away your power.

The illusion is identifying with our lower, animal characteristics self.

It's our identity with our lower self that keeps us separated from our higher realized self. Giving in to the lower emotions, allowing those negative emotions to hook us and jerk us around. In the long run this type of ego indulgence will make you weak, acidic and open the door to a plethora of health problems.
Stop being a little baby.
Stop whining when you don't get your way.

The purpose of life is to grow.
Prime Directive

My spiritual mentor, the great meditation master Hilda Charlton was a surgeon when it came to uncovering the ego's hiding places. She would teach that anyone that could press your buttons and get under your skin was showing you your inequities, pointing out your weaknesses, the places you can still get stuck spiritually.

In essence, people who press your buttons are your teachers and they are giving you valuable teachings.

Hilda also said, "To take offense is as bad as to give offense."
So the next time someone insults you, says something cruel, is rude, thoughtless, ugly...
that negative, terrible vibe is their reality, don't take it on, don't accept it. Especially when they give that ultimate b.s. by saying, "I'm only telling you for your own good, you know , so you don't get hurt in the long run."
Remember your Zen,
what's the sound of one hand clapping?
It takes two to tango. Don't be suckered into a fight. Maybe you need to practice a couple of smart strategies or lovingly playful and intelligent comebacks.
Thank them for sharing their opinion and maybe tell them you will consider what they have shared. Then look inside of yourself honestly; if it really is your issue, even though what they shared might have been rude and insensitive, you be strong and brave and address it. Make believe it didn't come from them but from someone you highly respect. If after considering it a time, you recognize that it's their problem, their issue not yours, then you have responded correctly to them by saying you will consider it, so just carry on. Also remember, if you react to it, it has now become your problem.

REMEMBER: The path of self-realization is about mastering your lower self.

Your little stinky EGO will do anything to keep you from coming into your power and fulfilling your destiny.
It's the dark side.

So, hold your center, don't fall for it, don't give away your power.

Don't play victim.

Every experience is an opportunity, a lesson;
every person is your teacher, your guide.
those that press your buttons.

Sometimes the universe gives us lessons and direction through other people. Change the way you think. Nobody can verbally violate you unless you believe you are being violated. Make believe everywhere you're sent, you're being sent for a reason. Sometimes to grow and learn, sometimes to serve and uplift, even sometimes to teach.
Find your lessons in all things, become like a child and make believe this is an interactive universe. A universe that is constantly pushing you to grow.

Meditation: The Final Frontier

How To Awaken Yourself

by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

We humans have explored the farthest regions of outer space,
have probed the deepest depths of the oceans, have split the atom, and discovered that our entire world of matter is made of waves and particles of light but for most of history we haven't had a clue about our inner world.

That Clueless Time Is Over,
the word is out,
the battle for the future is on,
It's Time to Awaken,
come into your power by becoming fully conscious.
The only way to do that is by going inward,
by meeting your higher self,
by mastering meditation.

if you ever really, sincerely want to know God
you will have to go inward.

It is not a coincidence,

that virtually every religion and spiritual pathway
now and throughout history has taught the same maxim,

The way to awaken this profound liberated self,
whether you want to call it truth,
Oneness, God, Spirit or just your higher self,
is by training your brain with daily exercises that involve
attention, breath and concentration.

"If you want to find God,
hang out in the space between your thoughts."
Alan Cohen

From every corner of the globe,
from every race and religion,
from every time throughout recorded history
come sages, seers and wise ones
teaching the ancient spiritual meditation techniques
of turning inward, making your mind like a crystal clear lake with no ripples and becoming at one with your "true, higher self."
From Jesus to the Bal Shem Tov,
from Buddha to Sai Baba,
from St. Theresa to Lao Tzu,

has been the key

There are many different ways to quiet your mind
and align with your higher self and it doesn't have to take on a religious tone either.
Some martial arts students practice I Chuan,
the standing meditation.
I entitled it,
the Smiling Buddha Exercise.
Simply extend you arms out in front of your shoulders as if you were hugging a tree, make your body completely relaxed, breathe deeply and smile. This exercise will empower you and strengthen your body as it dramatically boosts your immune system.
The smiling part is the key to opening your heart.
Now do this daily for longer and longer amounts of time.

You can work with a focused breathing like the Zen Buddhists do in Zazen, or deeply immerse yourself by contemplating spiritual themes and prayers. You can begin the repetition of sacred words called mantras, or by singing and chanting the names of God in sacred songs called bhajans. You can also be mindful of every present action and completely live in the now.
My revered teacher, the meditation master Hilda Charlton taught the easiest path to oneness is the Bhakti Path.
Bhakti is the path of the heart where the student (chela) learns to cultivate endless thankfulness, love and devotion.
For the Bhakta (an individual that follows the path of the heart),
love is the answer to the question how.
When you are completely empty,
you come into your true higher power.

to real spirituality and profound realization.

"Through the study of books one seeks God;
by meditation one finds him."

Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina

This concept of training or evolving your brain is so important and wide ranging historically that there are many archaeologists who believe the emergence of focused attention in ancient campfire rituals increased homo sapiens brain capacity thus contributing to the final phases of human biological evolution. And there are so many scientific studies on meditation and brain research
going on right now around the world,
the flood of results coming in are extraordinary.
Research shows that meditation may stimulate the growth of new brain cells in the frontal cortex and increased brain volume is a very big deal. The frontal cortex is our Command Central for decision making, problem solving, motivation, good judgement, planning and some important emotional considerations as well

Meditation is the key to life!

Simply start by doing breathing exercises to calm down the monkey mind. Five, ten minutes everyday. Any yogic breathing exercises will do. Work with your breath and maybe do a little visualization, like breathing love or light into your heart and on the exhale, seeing the energy travel up your spine. Hilda believed  the easiest way to go into deep meditation was to do heart centered practice. She would have us do heart or devotional breathing. Breath love into your heart, breathe it out to the world. Breathe love into your heart, breathe it up your spine out the top of your head. As you go deeper and deeper into one pointed awareness, you will begin to experience wonderful things. Hilda said its easier to rise in love than to just work with your breath or a mantra. But anyway you do it,
consistent meditation practice leads to Liberation!
Stop playing around and get spiritual.

"I'm simply saying that there is a way to be sane. I'm saying that you can get rid of all this insanity created by the past in you. Just by being a simple witness of your thought processes.

It is simply sitting silently, witnessing the thoughts, passing before you. Just witnessing, not interfering not even judging, because the moment you judge you have lost the pure witness. The moment you say "this is good, this is bad," you have already jumped onto the thought process.

It takes a little time to create a gap between the witness and the mind. Once the gap is there, you are in for a great surprise, that you are not the mind, that you are the witness, a watcher.

And this process of watching is the very alchemy of real religion. Because as you become more and more deeply rooted in witnessing, thoughts start disappearing. You are, but the mind is utterly empty.

That's the moment of enlightenment. That is the moment that you become for the first time an unconditioned, sane, really free human being."
Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (OSHO)

"If every child in the world would be taught meditation,

we would eliminate violence from the world within one generation."

The Dalai Lama

choose your words wisely, not only the ones you say to others, but the ones you say to yourself. Don't take anything personally. Accept both praise and criticism equally. But take neither to heart. Never assume. Don't ever judge a book by its cover. The truth is there are many surprises awaiting you on your journey. Pursue perfection.
