OH! My Aching Back...

by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

"Back pain is the number one cause of lost work days in the United States."

Dr. Anders Cohen, chief of neurosurgery and spine surgery at the Brooklyn Hospital Center, in New York City.

My grandfather built the Empire State Building, my father built the World Trade Center. My dad was a bull of a man; Manhattan champ wrestler, a great long distance swimmer and a champion ballroom dancer, all in a construction workers body. So it didn't come as any surprise that by the time dad was in his late thirty's he was suffering from chronic lower back and knee problems. Throughout my childhood I remember him running from specialist to specialist; Orthopedic doctors, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Physical Therapist's, Physiatrists (M.D. Level PT), all supposedly lower back, pain management specialists. The pain he experienced laid him up for weeks and months at a time and seeing your father disabled was probably the impetus for my massage therapy career. By the time I was in my early twenties (1970's), I was intently studying Oriental and Macrobiotic healing arts. I was teaching meditation at the N.Y. Center for Macrobiotics and was told by all three of the macro center directors, Serena Silva, Shizuko Yamamoto and Annemarie Colbin, that a revered and brilliant Japanese doctor, a master of 16 martial arts was coming to the center to teach.  His name was Sensei Masahiro Oki and he ran a world famous clinic in Japan for folks battling serious degenerative diseases. His skills at Oriental diagnosis were so finely honed that he could diagnose your condition by merely looking at you. Oriental diagnosis traditionally was used by martial artists to determine where their opponents would be vulnerable. It later turned into a powerful diagnostic tool used by Asian healers and medical practitioners. Essentially it is the art of observing how an individual looks, moves and expresses themselves.

It took your body years to get cold, hard and tight. Just look in the mirror. Does your head tilt to one side? Is one shoulder higher than the other? Do your feet point outward and the heel of your shoes wear out on one side? Did the "S" curve of your spine become a "C"? Do your shoulders or neck jut forward? Does your pelvis tilt down on an angle? This happens to all of us, it's not just you. In Oriental medicine, the muscular stiffness and inflexibility of aging, along with the associative pain and the overall degenerative process is believed to be directly influenced by our lifestyle choices and specifically our nutritional excesses. So if you consume more than your body can burn or more than your internal organs can manage, these excesses will affect how you move, express yourself and how you age. Essentially diseases of excess are rich people's problems. You might not recognize the affluence you are living with because that is all you have ever known but there is a reason why Americans are so obese and have so many degenerative conditions.

The practitioner takes into account which muscles and meridians exhibit imbalances and how our lifestyle excesses display themselves on the human body. The acupuncture lines on the body are called meridians and meridians are considered extensions of the internal organs. So for instance, if you are consuming too much fat or alcohol in your diet, areas associated with the liver and gall bladder would show signs of excess or discharge. In the back of the neck there are gall bladder diagnosis points, so dietary excesses might result in a stiff neck or an inter-scapula knot in your rhomboids just over the liver on the right side. One day Shizuko took me aside and said that Master Oki's power of diagnosis was so finely tuned that he could diagnose an individuals condition by simply smelling them from across the room. Apparently even how you smell has diagnostic implications.  Well, I just had to see for myself so I attended Master Oki's classes and as advertised Sensei was amazing. He seemed to know exactly where to press on your body to make you jump with pain and sensitivity. Then he would have you do an adaptive yoga posture and the sensitive area would disappear like magic. Or he would run his hand over your body and by simply feeling the hot or cold areas would tell you which organs were imbalanced and under duress. According to Sensei, many areas that stay cold are stagnant areas that would eventually get much worse. So a simple, continual cold butt might portend a future hysterectomy or a future prostate condition.

All of these excesses show up throughout your musculature. Once again, keep in mind that the meridians that run just under the surface of our skin are extensions of the internal organs.  So complaints in the organs refer symptoms throughout the musculature and a trained eye can see it all. It's all about excess...

Excess fat= heart, liver and respiratory disease

Excess protein= kidney disease
Excess sugar= diabetes
Excess salt= strokes
Excess environmental exposure (chemical, hormone, pesticide, radiation) = cancer
Excess in general= imbalance, mental health problems, accidents, suicide

Sensei Oki's breath of knowledge and understanding regarding the human body was so profound I decided dad had to have a consultation.  So the day arrived and we went to see my new teacher.  Sensei took one look at my father and said,

"You American's are so foolish, you think you can eat anything. Mr. Heisler, the reason you have been suffering so is because of your kidneys and intestines.  If you don't change your diet immediately you will continue to get worse and eventually die from kidney disease."

He strongly advocated dad to consume a completely plant based diet. He then hit some acupuncture points on dads body and had dad stretch in some very interesting yogic ways and again almost like magic, dad had no pain! When we got into the elevator my father looked at me and said, "I think he's full of it, but he did get me out of pain and no one has ever been able to do that, so I'm going to do what he says and see what happens." When we arrived home, dad announced to mom that he was becoming a vegetarian. Now it was true, my father never ate anything resembling fiber and in those days all that mom made was flesh foods and simple carbs.  Eggs for breakfast, some sort of dead thing sandwich on white bread for lunch and more meat, meat, meat for dinner. A salad would consist of iceberg lettuce and tomato with Heinz distilled vinegar and Mazola corn oil. Healthy nutrition? No such thought. After going through the big depression and the big war, my folks were just happy to have food on the table. I think it would be fair to say that Master Oki scared the living daylights out of dad and seemingly overnight he became aware and changed everything.  It's as if the light came on.  He still ate a little fish and seafood but now it was a macro style diet; grains, beans, soups, salads, fruits, veggies, seeds, nuts, fermented soy products like miso, tofu, etc.
Now here's the really amazing thing;
dads visit to Oki was the very last time he had any problems with his back!  What's more, his knee gradually improved and that too never afflicted him again. On the first anniversary of his meeting with Master Oki and especially pain free living, dad announced to the family that "Oki" was the most impressive man he had ever met and he would be eternally grateful to him. Dad lived another 25 years after that meeting and eventually succumbed to asbestos poisoning.

I would say way more than two thirds of the 60,000 massages I've

performed have been on individuals with some sought of serious back complaint. In my professional opinion, after 42 years of performing massage therapy on literally thousands of athletes and tens of thousands of regular folks, it has become glaringly obvious after taking a history, the two single biggest factors associated with lower back complaints are a

and in particular highly inflammatory foods,
RED MEAT being number one in that category.

Normally I ask each and every person to account as best they can for the dietary choices leading up to the moment their back became obviously a more serious problem. I can do this because formerly I was Director of Nutrition Education for the medical group I still reside in. Hands down, when I ask what the patient ate leading up to their back pain, i get the same response over and over again. Red meat along with lack of fiber. Maybe it's because a pound of beef is the equivalent of sixteen pounds of grain and that's really high up on the food chain or maybe it's the highly inflammatory arachidonic acid in the beef. Allegedly arachidonic acid plays a role in cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and even rheumatoid arthritis. I really can't say. Now gathering information like this is called anecdotal or coincidental, but when you've seen and heard the same thing come up tens of thousands of times, in my opinion, it's not anecdotal any longer, it's science!
Here's what Dr. Michael Greger says about arachidonic acid and inflammation...

The second part to this is equally amazing. When the person in pain finally changes their diet for good, in other words, when they stop eating red meat completely, they become back pain free for good.

"So let me get this clear, when you got out of bed this morning your back was giving you a lot of pain, is that correct?  And you say you had no pain all weekend but just this morning, something as simple as putting on your pants blew your back out? Ok, let's think about this for a second, what did you eat yesterday? What did you eat over the weekend?"

"Nearly one in 10 people across the globe suffers from an aching lower back and in a 3-month period, about one-fourth of U.S. adults experience at least 1 day of back pain.
It is one of our society's most common medical problems. "

It's Time To Meditate Daily

by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

"One must not unresistingly let himself be swept along by unfavorable circumstances, nor permit his steadfastness to be shaken. He can avoid this by maintaining his inner light, while remaining outwardly yielding and tractable. With this attitude he can overcome even the greatest of adversities."

I Ching or Book of Changes, Wilhelm/Baynes Edition

Here's what I can tell you;

Change is the only reality you can rely on.

It is your friend.

And being able to adapt to change means you are really healthy.

Rigidity and reaction are more than acquaintances, they are lovers and

they are both fueled by that
little stinky EGO.

The battle for the future is on,
do you want to make a difference or do you want to continue whining?

It is time to enhance your

The only way to do that is by going inward, by connecting with your higher self and then by mastering your smaller, weaker self.
It's by becoming physically empty that we come into our ultimate power.

"Go into the closet and close the door."

"When thine eye be single, thy body shall be filled with light"

Mathew 6.6, 6.22

To have the strength and courage to walk your walk and to talk your talk, meditation is one of the secret weapons.
The other is an impeccable diet.

No more cheating, no more weakness, no more excuses.

Open your heart, make your words filled with spirit,
live the truth. It's the only way to heal this country.

Like my songs says...

 Time to Step Up!

"Through the study of books one seeks God;

by meditation one finds him."

Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina

It is not a coincidence,

that virtually every religion and spiritual pathway now and throughout history has taught the same maxim,

The way to awaken this profound liberated self,

whether you want to call it truth,

Oneness, God, Spirit or just your higher self,

is by training your brain with daily exercises that involve

attention, breath and concentration.

From every corner of the globe,
from every race and religion,
from every time throughout recorded history
come sages, seers and wise ones
teaching the ancient spiritual meditation techniques
of turning inward, making your mind like a crystal clear lake with no ripples and becoming at one with your "true, higher self."
From Jesus to the Bal Shem Tov,
from Buddha to Sai Baba,
from St. Theresa to Lao Tzu,

has been the key

to real spirituality and profound realization.

"If every child in the world would be taught meditation,

we would eliminate violence from the world within one generation."

The Dalai Lama

 Perform breathing exercises everyday.

Breathing exercise prepares ones mind for deeper contemplation and eventually leads to deep states of meditation.

In addition you will handle stress, fatigue and anxieties much better.

Try the Mahadavananda breath, this great Indian Yogi

used this breath to achieve impressive longevity.

HOW TO DO IT...Put your right pointer finger on your third eye, cover your right nostril with your right thumb. Breathe up your left nostril, hold the breath and close both nostrils, bring your chin down to your chest, tongue to the roof of your mouth and squeeze your butt. Hold...  now slowly lift your head and exhale out your left nostril. Now inhale in that same left nostril, hold the breathe and close both nostrils, chin to chest, tongue to the roof of your mouth, squeeze your butt again. Now slowly lift your head and exhale out your right nostril. Repeat entire sequence for three minutes. Perform four times a day; upon awakening, around lunch, when your return home from work and before you go to bed. Four times a day.

See what happens after a week!

3. Perform the Smiling Buddha Technique Daily

Smiling Budha

This is an amazing I Chuan technique used by Tai Chi folks and martial artists alike to dramatically strengthen their body, boost their immune function and help them come into their power by developing the ability to become empty. My Tai Chi Sifu Gary Carbone says it's by becoming physically empty that we come into out ultimate power. Of course as a meditation teacher we teach the exact same thing. The fact that it really makes you healthier is very powerful but another amazing quality and I have found this out first hand, is that this technique opens the heart center. Try it and you'll see what I mean. Stand with your knees slightly bent, back straight, head square upon your shoulders with hands stretched out in front of you as if you were hugging a tree trunk. Have your hands facing you about the height of your pecs. Now for the next five minutes as you stand hugging an imaginary tree, just breathe and let go of all the stress in your body.

Eventually in time you will do this standing meditation for a half hour, even an hour at a time. I have done this technique with every Tai Chi instructor I have ever worked with but never in all the years has anyone suggested to do this all the while with a smile on my face. Try it, it's an extraordinary technique.

 4. Try meditating every morning and every evening.

After your three minutes of the Mahadavananda breathe, close your eyes and as if there was a nose in the center of your chest breathe into your heart center.

Breathe in light or love, or a color and with each exhale, visualize the energy going up your spine out the top of your head.

Make you mind like a crystal clear lake with no ripples. When your mind wanders bring it back to your breathe. Do ten minutes and culminate by visualizing your day perfect, sending your loved ones healing thoughts, opening your heart to gratitude and thankfulness
or do some healing work.

 5. Perform the Yoga Sun Salutation Everyday.

"Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do, every minute of every day of your life. And he has a list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any, any of these ten things, he has a special place full of fire and smoke and ash and torture where he will send you to suffer and burn and scream and cry forever and ever until the end of time!...
But he loves you.

He loves you and he needs money!"
