Secrets of Longevity
by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT
It's natural to need motivation especially when it comes
to a healthy lifestyle. When i first started working at the
Parsippany Medical Complex in October of 1979, I was hired to be Director
of Nutrition. Our medical director would send me patients that just
came out of surgery like a heart bypass or patients that were just
diagnosed with something ominous. My approach was as dramatic as the
patients dire circumstances; I would advise that they were to
immediately change their diet to no meat, no dairy, no sugar and no
simple carbs. Essentially no foods extremely high up on the food
chain like most animal flesh along with no acid forming foods (soda,
sugar, coffee, simple carbs, cheap table salt) were allowed. I
prescribed a diet of whole grains and beans, miso based soups,
salads, cooked and raw green leafy vegetables, seeds, nuts, some
specialty foods like sea vegetables, plant based proteins along with
small amounts of fish. Essentially i recommended a Mediterranean
diet. I routinely came across patients that were so adamant about NOT
changing their diet, not giving up that steak or bowl of ice cream,
that they would vehemently say things like, "I would rather die
than give up my hamburger or my ice cream," and then within a
short period of time, they would actually die!
I remember quipping to our medical director that his
patients would rather die than switch.
It's not so different today nearly 40 years later.
Depends where in the country you go.
I tell folks all the time if you need motivation when it
comes to your health and fitness, take a trip to your local assisted
care facility. The residents are at the age where they grew up on the
modern American diet, so they are a perfect example of exactly what
happens to us when we eat that way. Just go up and say,
"Hey pop, how you doing
Something my mother warned me never to do, she would
"Never, ever ask a senior
citizen how they are doing."
Forty five minutes later, after an endless revealing
discussion of their dire symptoms, you might find your salvation.
Especially if their personal health discussion culminates with a
final memorable condition like say, a leaking colon.
Yeah, that kind of motivation.
So I decided to arm ourselves with a bonafide list of
well documented, researched longevity alternatives. Some more
documented than others but well worth a look. There is enough for a
book here and that's probably where all this insight and research
will go eventually.
So here's my current list of life extension strategies.
- Eat a plant based diet!
(when you eat more than your body can burn the excess creates
dis-ease. Remember it takes 16 pounds of grain to make one pound
of beef). Eat the grain and age way better and slower.
- Take my Basic Longevity
Formula (high antioxidant multi vitamin, Vitamin D w/K2 (mine
includes 5,000 of D), Total EFA's (flax, evening primrose,
borage oil or fish oil), Alpha Lipoic Acid).
- So many antioxidants have
been shown to increase the lifespans of lab animals. I rotate
around a fair number of these wonder products, Co Q 10, ester C,
N Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), trans-Resveratrol which includes
Japanese knotweed and grape seed extract, green tea extract,
olive leaf extract, Dr. Steven Gundry's polyphenol formula
called Vital Reds, Allergy Research Fibronal (Ecklonia Cava is
the name of the unique super antioxidant that is derived from
special brown seaweed).
- Put two tablespoons of freshly
ground flax seeds in your oatmeal, smoothie, whatever. Omega 3
fats counteract inflammation. Omega 6 fats create it (cottonseed
oil, soy, corn, sunflower, safflower).
- Enjoy a miso based soup
three or more times a week. Miso alkalizes your body.
- Drink alkaline water (ph
7.35 and above).
- Eat broccoli sprouts in
your salad. The sprouts contain 50 times more of the cancer
fighting phytochemical sulforaphane than the broccoli
- Purchase and use high
quality, full trace mineral salt.
- When eating bread, get
the Ezekiel organic sprouted grain breads and muffins. They are
- Do exercise that
strengthens your core and extends your limbs. Flexibility is way
more important than strength.
- Deep tissue massage
therapy is the fountain of youth. It breaks up the tight, hard
muscular glue and adhesion of aging, significantly increases
oxygen and circulation, boosts immune function and makes you
look and feel younger.
- Use only natural skin
care and cosmetics.
- Meditate every day.
- Make thankfulness part of
your daily moment to moment routine.

I came across this
wonderful article by Patricia Joy Becker. Enjoy and she has a page on
Facebook. Leonardo Da Vinci said millet was the grain that brought
him to his wisdom.
Press here to hook up with her wisdom...
"Millet is one of my favorite whole grains. The tiny, round,
golden grain is a staple in Asia, India and Africa. It grows well in
depleted soil and with very little water which makes it very strong.
When we eat these delicious morsels they pass their hearty life force
on to us.
When we feed
our bodies strong and resilient food, we naturally become strong and
resilient. The enduring energy and life force in whole grains are
amazing. The tiny whole seed can be stored for decades, and when
planted and will sprout life again. This life force, ki or chi, is
one reason why grains are essential in a healthy diet.
There are numerous
varieties of millet grown in the world today, however yellow millet
is one of the variety most commonly sold in health food stores. It is
the most alkaline of all grains, therefore it is especially good for
people with acidosis. Millet is said to be good for mental work and
concentration. It also nourishes the spleen and pancreas.
When cooking with
millet, the possibilities for creating delicious soups, main courses,
croquettes and other meals are limitless.
Let me get you
started. Here are two simple savory recipes to get your own
MILLET AND CAULIFLOWER - also known as -

onions are golden brown. Add the carrots and cook until soft. Turn
off flame, and add the parsley and mix. Blend the sautéed vegetables
into the cooked millet. Form into patties approximately 1 inch thick.
Heat a heavy skillet and generously coat with remaining oil. Pan fry
patties on both sides until golden brown. Serves 4 or 5.
OTHER GREAT MILLET
Polenta Squares - Add 1 C millet, 1 C polenta, ¼ teaspoon sea salt and
4 C purified water to a boil in a large heavy bottomed pot. Reduce
heat to simmer, and cook covered for 1 hour. Pour into oiled baking
dish, cool and cut into squares. Optionally the squares are delicious
lightly fried in olive oil. Serve with fresh pesto, black beans or
Amaranth - Rinse grains and cook with two-to-one
water-to-grains ratio with a pinch of sea salt. Bring to a
rolling boil for 2 minutes. Turn the heat to low simmer and cook 30
Amaranth, Squash and Onions - Sauté ½ C chopped onions and ½
chopped winter squash. Follow "Millet and Amaranth"
guidelines above, with additional sautéed vegetables and ½ C extra water.

a garnish at the end.
serving this beautiful golden grain, garnish it with a fresh sprig of
parsley or sliced scallions to make it as appealing to the eye as it
is to the taste buds.

sera sera, whatever will be, will be."
